Eine nationale Begeisterung erfasste, ausgehend von den bürgerlichen Schichten, alle anderen breiten Teile der Bevölkerung. Auch eine große Mehrheit der Intellektuellen in Deutschland stimmte in diese scheinbar einheitlich klingende Begeisterung bei Kriegsausbruch ein. Hier sind Namen wie die der Historiker Friedrich Meinecke und Hans Delbrück oder die von Nationalökonomen wie Gustav Schmoller aber auch Theologen wie Friedrich Naumann zu nennen.
